ABOUT THE SERIES: Petalum

This collection of twenty-two black and white botanical studies is an exploration of form, light and shade. The lighting technique Paul uses, creates a sculptural quality to each subject, almost as though each one is carved from stone.

Petalum is Paul's original floral series; evolving from an initial portrait of a small pink tulip, to inspiring a full series of black and white botanical portraits.

The darkness surrounding each flower and leaf lends the images elegance and gravitas and allows the viewers' attention to focus completely on the subject; its form, texture and detail.

The initial study, Pink Tulip IV, has won numerous international awards and was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. The Petalum series as a whole earned Paul the coveted Fellowship at the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP), which he attained for “distinguished and exceptional ability and creativity”
